The Athletic Poll: Montreal’s Luguentz Dort Ranked Third Best Defenseman in the NBA

Montrealer Luguentz Dort was chosen as the third best defenseman in the league in a poll conducted by The Athletic with 147 NBA players spread across the 30 teams, almost a third of the total.

A new sensation on the circuit, rookie Victor Wembanyama received the most votes (15.8%) at his height of 7 ft 3, compared to 9.8% for Lu Dort. Jrue Holiday, who won hands down last year in this same poll, is now relegated to second place.

“He can defend against several positions, he is physical and he does not make mistakes, even when the referees signaled a lot of mistakes at the start of the season,” revealed a player anonymously to justify his choice in favor of the Quebecer.

Wemby’s name returned to the top as a player to build a team around with 27.9% of the vote, a slim 0.7% lead over Denver Nuggets star Nikola Jokic. Wembanyama is only 20 years old and will continue to progress in the coming years, an incentive for the players who have spoken out.

As announced yesterday, Jokic is an official candidate in the top-3 in the running for the title awarded to the league’s most valuable player this season with Luka Doncic of the Mavericks and Canadian Shai Gilgeous-Alexander of the Thunder. In the current poll, 41.8% of voters believe Jokic should earn the title for a third time in the last four seasons, while SGA received 36.9% of the vote. Some mention that the Canadian is part of an overlooked team that no one expected in the playoffs and that he is the most consistent player without having sustained help every game, in addition to playing both ways of the field.

Jayson Tatum (4.3%), Giannis Antetokounmpo (1.4%) and Donovan Mitchell (1.4%) follow this trio.

Among the other categories, Rudy Gobert is considered the most overrated player by 13.6%, while conversely, Derrick White and Jalen Williams would deserve more recognition with both 10.3% of the votes. SGA is fourth in this regard.
