That’s why so many professional cyclists fall

Any luck? That was probably the first thought that many people had when the news from the hospital wards made the rounds on Thursday evening after the serious fall on the Tour of the Basque Country. The two-time Tour de France winner Jonas Vingegaard, transported away on a stretcher with a neck brace and oxygen tube, suffered a broken rib and collarbone and a bruised lung. For Remco Evenepoel it was the shoulder blade and collarbone, for Primoz Roglic it was just abrasions.

Australian Jay Vine suffered the worst injuries: a fracture of the cervical spine and two fractures of the thoracic spine, but fortunately he was not diagnosed with any neurological problems. The TV images had given rise to fears of something even worse.
