Dominic Thiem survived the first round of qualifying for the ATP 1000 tournament in Madrid after a fight. The Lower Austrian, 110th in the world rankings, beat Brazilian Felipe Meligeni Alves (ATP 128th) 6:2 3:6 7:5 on Monday. However, Juri Rodionov was eliminated after a 3:6 6:2 2:6 defeat against Valentin Vacherot (MON).

Meligeni Alves took the lead 2-0 in the deciding set and served at 5-4 for the match. But Thiem managed the rebreak, he also won the following two games and converted his second match point after 2:19 hours. In the second and final qualifying round on Tuesday (not before 3 p.m.) Thiem will face either the Australian Thanasi Kokkinakis or the Frenchman Gregoire Barrere.
Sebastian Ofner is firmly in the main competition, the Styrian will meet the Argentinian Pedro Cachin in the first round. The two previous duels on clay went over three sets and once to Ofner (2018 in Sao Paulo) and once to Cachin (2023 at a Challenger in Madrid).
In the new world rankings, Cachin is ranked 91st, 46 places behind Ofner, who fell three positions to 45th compared to the previous week. Thiem lost five places and is 110th, Rodionov is 117th.
Djokovic cancels start
Novak Djokovic had already canceled his start in Madrid. The Serb was last on the court in Monte Carlo at the beginning of the month, but so far this year he has only played four tournaments and won none of them. The 36-year-old world number one reportedly wants to return to the tournament in Rome in early May to prepare for the French Open.
