Tennis Hothead Daniil Medvedev’s Outburst at Monte Carlo Masters

Daniil Medvedev was hard to calm down. “Open your eyes, open your damn eyes! He was over!” complained the Russian tennis hothead during his game against compatriot Karen Khachanow at the ATP Masters in Monte Carlo. His tirade was directed at referee Carlos Bernardes, who had seen a ball from Khachanov in the field that had supposedly landed out of bounds when the score was 5:5 in the second set.

“Who takes responsibility for something like that? The referee doesn’t need glasses because he can’t see anyway. He shouldn’t be a referee,” Medvedev demanded angrily in a conversation with the tournament director.

The world number four received a point penalty after his outburst; Medvedev had already been warned when he threw his racket away after a double fault. A little later, the Australian Open finalist lost the round of 16 game 3:6, 5:7.

Medvedev, who is known for his outbursts of anger and heated discussions with referees, was already confronted with an alleged referee error in his second round game against Frenchman Gael Monfils, which further angered him.

“It’s not my job to direct the games,” said Medvedev: “Who will do something about it afterwards?”
