Tennis first round exit for Tatjana Maria at the tournament in Stuttgart

Before Angelique Kerber’s first appearance in Germany as a mother on the tennis tour, Tatjana Maria’s tournament in Stuttgart has already ended. The Swabian loses a strange match.

Former Wimbledon semi-finalist Tatjana Maria was eliminated in the first round of the clay court tennis tournament in Stuttgart. The 36-year-old from Bad Saulgau lost to the favored Belgian Elise Mertens 1:6, 6:4, 0:6.

The world number 66 was in the first and third sets. and German number one has no chance. Maria played against the world number 30. flawed and not her best tennis. In the second round, the Swabian fought her way into the game better and with a successful stop ball in the deciding set. But Maria lacked consistency again, she got annoyed several times and was no longer able to win a game.

The currently best German tennis player traveled to Stuttgart directly from the Billie Jean King Cup in Brazil. She contributed one point to the 3-1 win against the hosts last weekend and to reaching the final round of the national competition by winning a singles match.

Maria in the main field thanks to the wildcard

With her first round exit in Stuttgart, she missed a possible round of 16 against the Polish world number one and defending champion Iga Swiatek. Like Angelique Kerber and Laura Siegemund, Maria was in the strong main field thanks to a wildcard.

The three-time Grand Slam tournament winner Kerber and Siegemund from Metzingen will only get involved in the action on Wednesday. On her first appearance in Germany after her maternity leave, Kerber from Kiel will meet the sensational winner of the US Open 2021, the British Emma Raducanu (6.30 p.m./Eurosport and DAZN). Siegemund plays against the Ukrainian Marta Kostjuk (2nd game after 12.30 p.m.).
