Tara VanDerveer, The coach with the most victories in the history of college basketball in the United States (NCAA), announced her retirement this Tuesday night.
The extraordinary coach is retiring after 38 seasons leading the Stanford women’s varsity team and a 45-year career in total. She will turn 71 on June 26.
On January 21, VanDerveer surpassed Mike Krzyzewski in the NCAA winning record. She leaves with a combined 1,216 wins under her belt as a coach for college teams at Idaho, Ohio State and Stanford.
“Basketball is the greatest group project there is and I am incredibly grateful for every person who has supported me and our teams throughout my coaching career,” VanDerveer said in a statement. “I have had the pleasure of training the best and brightest at one of the world’s leading institutions for nearly four decades.”
VanDerveer’s legacy will be long-lasting, coaches, players and basketball experts acknowledge. She always took the time to mentor other coaches, exchange game film, and would even go to the visiting locker room to offer words of encouragement and provide her insight into the sport.
VanDerveer’s last day on the job is scheduled for May 8, the 39th anniversary of his hiring. Her retired coach plans to continue working for Stanford University and its athletic department in an advisory capacity.

His interest in basketball began since childhood. He was an athlete with the universities of Albany and Indiana, between 1971 and 1975.
But she was destined to be a great strategist of the game and an extraordinary coach. Her Stanford teams won NCAA titles in 1990, 1992 and 2021 and reached the Final Four 14 times.
VanDerveer took a year away from Stanford to lead the undefeated U.S. women’s team to the gold medal at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics.
She was inducted into the Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame in 2002. She has been named Coach of the Year five times.
College basketball and sports in general will miss her professionalism and her dedication as one of the best coaches in history.
