SV Werder Bremen Celebrates Victory Over Stuttgart, Focuses on Season Goals Ahead

In short, and rightly so, there was great joy about the 2-1 win against Stuttgart. But SV Werder Bremen quickly focuses again on the rest of the season and what there is still to win.

A volcanic eruption of emotions would hardly correspond to the nature of Ole Werner. And after all of Bremen’s dams broke shortly after the final whistle on Sunday, a little later the coach classified this 2-1 against VfB Stuttgart with his usual objectivity: “Against a good team and despite major personnel concerns, it is obviously possible We wanted to prove this.”

And after all: “The fact that the harvest could be reaped, not just with one point, but with three points – I was very happy about that. Because I think that, given all the chances that Stuttgart had, it was deserved.” Every single one of his players showed fighting spirit, and the team also worked as a group. So again: “It gives us the confidence that if we put everything on the pitch, we can score points in the final spurt, even against top teams.”

“Everyone fights with all determination”

What does this first win since February 16th (1-0 in Cologne) mean for the rest of the season? From the outside, it seems that Werder can hardly get into the relegation vortex in terms of the table. For Werner it is simply three points more, important in the crucial phase of the year. “At the end of the day, every point is even harder to earn because all teams are fighting for their goals with all their determination.” Also important: The conviction in Bremen was and is there this time – it was only three years ago that the Hanseatic League was relegated to the 2nd league from a position in the table that was almost certain.

Found the right balance

There will be a different spirit in 2024, despite the unrest in the surrounding area that has recently been noticeable to the team and coach. “The key is the ability to concentrate on what you can directly influence,” says Werner. “We can only influence the atmosphere around it through good work every day, which will hopefully lead to results down the road that will allow us to achieve our goals.” More than a start was made here with the energy performance against Stuttgart. “The important thing is that you stick with it, that you remain persistent. The boys do it, the boys believe in themselves. We try to remain objective, even in phases like this, and – even when things are going well – to concentrate on our issues .”

With Ole Werner, the team seems to have found the right balance after the recent downturn. “On days when we win, we don’t float on a cloud. On days when things go badly, we don’t fall into complete doom and gloom. That’s the key to being able to work our way out of difficult phases.”
