Strider underwent surgery on his throwing elbow and will miss the rest of the season

Spencer Strider underwent surgery Friday to repair the ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow with internal support, performed by Dr. Keith Meister in Arlington. The right-hander will miss the remainder of the season, the team announced Saturday.

Last Saturday, Strider underwent an MRI scan that showed ligament damage in his elbow.

Strider had an excellent preseason and continued that momentum during Opening Day on March 29 in Philadelphia. But it was evident that something was wrong when he allowed five runs in just four innings of work against the D-backs on April 5. He didn’t inform the team that he was experiencing discomfort in his elbow until the end of that 88-pitch outing.

The MRI on April 6 revealed that the problem originated the night before.

“You never expect these things to be good,” Braves manager Brian Snitker said last weekend. “It’s rarely just a dot on the screen. When a kid has problems like this, we’ve often seen what happens.”

There is no estimated recovery time for Strider, but internal support should allow the Braves ace to return sooner than with Tommy John surgery.
