Standoff between Samuel Eto’o and Minister of Sports over Coach Appointment: What’s Next for Cameroonian Football?

Engaged in a standoff with the Minister of Sports following the appointment of Marc Brys as coach, Samuel Eto’o, the president of the Cameroonian football federation (Fecafoot), received an indirect but very clear message from of his supervisory ministry!

While Marc Brys was officially inducted on Monday and he appealed to Eto’o to which the latter has remained deaf for the moment, a meeting is planned between Fecafoot and Minister Narcisse Mouelle Kombi, Thursday at the prime minister’s office. Since then, observers have hoped for a reconciliation, or at least an amicable settlement between the two players in Cameroonian football. Otherwise, we would be heading towards an unprecedented situation with the same selection equipped with two different frameworks. As a reminder, Fécafoot has in fact asked its number one to choose his own staff in parallel with that of Brys.

“An almost suicidal attitude”

“Either Samuel Eto’o has decided to adopt an almost suicidal attitude, or he hopes to negotiate something with the Minister of Sports. But we don’t really see what his goal is, and especially who he could appoint”commented a former member of Fecafoot who requested anonymity, in comments relayed by
The world. Supported in his election by the Cameroonian inner circle, the former Barcelona resident, renowned for his strong character, would therefore be shooting himself in the foot by continuing his conflict with the State to the end, as Cyrille Tollo warned, technical advisor to the Minister of Sports. “(Eto’o) is free to do what he wants, but the appointment of another coach would be a real defiance of the State”warned the advisor. “We continue to believe that he loves his country, that he respects its institutions and that he will return to better feelings”he added.

Bell also warns Eto’o

On the other hand, the Cameroonian goalkeeper legend, Joseph-Antoine Bell, double African champion (1984, 1988) warned Eto’o against a potential degradation of his image.
“I don’t see any coach, whether Cameroonian or foreign, who could accept such an offer and put himself in a very uncomfortable position which could harm his reputation.he said for The world. Samuel Eto’o says he is busy with his father’s funeral, which is commendable. When could he find the time to look for a coach? And above all for what purpose? A coach has been appointed, we must put an end to this matter.”

At the ministry, we say we are not unduly worried about the sulking of Fécafoot. “In 2007 then in 2012, the body, then chaired by Mohammed Iya, did not want to sign the contracts of the German Otto Pfister and the Cameroonian Jean-Paul Akono, but this did not prevent their validation ”recalled Tollo Monde.
