St. Pauli loses its lead and HSV also fails

A week after the defeat at Karlsruher SC, FC St. Pauli has once again suffered a bitter setback in the promotion race of the second Bundesliga. With the 3:4 (1:0) at home against SV Elversberg, St. Pauli lost the league lead to Holstein Kiel.

Johannes Eggestein (39th), Marcel Hartel (69th) and Jackson Irvine (90th + 2) scored for the hosts, Maurice Neubauer (52nd), Joseph Boyamba (70th), Paul Wanner (81st) and Hugo Vandermersch (83.) scored the goals for the strong newcomers. St. Pauli is now only five points ahead of the in-form Fortuna from Düsseldorf in the relegation zone.

The Hamburg team had a hard time from the start. The newcomer from Elversberg, who had recently weakened a bit, had several good opportunities to score, which the strong Hamburg keeper Nikola Vasilj brilliantly defused.

Elversberg’s wealth of chances (11:5 shots on goal in the first half) then took revenge shortly before the break after a standard situation. Eric Smith took a corner to the near post, where Eggestein scored from close range to give the team a lucky half-time lead.

After Neubauer’s remarkable equalizer with a low shot into the right corner, events came to a head in the middle of the second half. Hartel first scored his 16th goal of the season from a central position to give the hosts the lead again, but a good minute later it was a draw again.

Substitute Joseph Boyamba finished dryly after a long ball to make it 2-2. St. Pauli repeatedly counterattacked, and Elversberg punished them coldly. Irvine could only shorten the score.

The second club from the Hanseatic city, Hamburger SV, also lost ground in the fight for a return to the top flight. After a 2:2 (0:2) draw at 1. FC Magdeburg, HSV is now three points behind third-placed Fortuna Düsseldorf.

HSV shows morals

The former Bundesliga dinosaur now needs a small miracle at the end of the season in order to achieve the promotion he longs for in the sixth attempt. In Magdeburg, coach Steffen Baumgart’s team had a start to forget: Guilherme Ramos was shown a red card in the 24th minute after an emergency stop, Mohammed El Hankouri converted the penalty (26th) – and increased shortly before the break (45th). .+7) with another penalty.

However, HSV showed morale and, despite being outnumbered, came to a late equalizer through Sebastian Schonlau (67′) and Jonas Meffert (90’+5). Next Saturday (1 p.m. in the FAZ live ticker for the second Bundesliga and on Sky) the top game against Kiel awaits the Rothosen.

Draw in the Lower Saxony Senderby

In the third game on Sunday, Eintracht Braunschweig Hannover 96 fought off a draw in the Niedersachsensenderby and initially left the relegation place in the relegation zone. Coach Daniel Scherning’s team fought to a 0-0 draw in an intense duel and jumped to 15th place in the table thanks to the draw.

Goalkeeper Ron-Thorben Hoffmann secured Braunschweig a point in the second half, but the lead over the first direct relegation zone is still only two points. In the meantime, Hannover will probably have to bury its last hopes of relegation in the promotion race. Five game days before the end of the season, the gap to Fortuna Düsseldorf is seven points.

While the fans in the stands drew attention with elaborate choreographies and the use of pyrotechnics, the game itself provided few highlights. Both teams played aggressively, the game was characterized by hectic and fighting – and only picked up a bit of momentum in the second half.

However, both Cedric Teuchert (59th) and Lars Gindorf (78th) failed with their great chances for Hannover due to the strong reaction of Hoffmann in the Braunschweig goal.
