Spring Spectacular: Ole Miss Football’s Grove Bowl Games 2024

OXFORD, Miss. – Wrapping up spring with a bang, Ole Miss football gathered for its annual spring game with a twist for 2024 with the first iteration of the Grove Bowl Games from Vaught-Hemingway Stadium and Jerry Hollingsworth field on Saturday afternoon.

The Red and Navy teams faced off in a dunk contest, 7-on-7, tug-of-war, a hotdog eating contest and a Grove Bowl Gauntlet as Red came out with the narrow victory at 71-70.

Switching it up to the hardwood, the Rebels kicked off Saturday with a dunk contest with Brandon Turnage and the Red Team taking home bragging rights and open an early advantage at 21-0.

In the first of four quarters of 7-on-7, Red struck first scoring a touchdown with Walker Howard connecting with Austin Acton to extend its lead to 27-0.

With Red and Navy facing off in five total rounds of tug-of-war, Red’s dominance continued with a first-round win to add four points to its score, 31-0. Navy broke through taking round two, to earn its first points of the day, trailing 31-4. Red reasserted itself in round three, adding four more points to bring the score to 35-4. Navy claimed round four to force a decisive round five in tug-of-war, with the score at 35-8. With staff jumping in for round five, red took its third win to defeat Navy in tug-of-war and remain ahead, 39-8.

The second quarter of 7-on-7 began with Howard once again connecting with Action for his second touchdown of the day, extending Red’s hold at 46-8. Navy reached the endzone off a short touchdown pass from AJ Maddox to Cayden Lee, trailing 46-14.

With a guest appearance from hot dog eating champion Joey Chestnut to sub in for Navy by eating 20 hotdogs in 90 seconds.  Taking home the win, Navy crept back in on red to close the gap to 10 at 46-36.

Back to 7-on-7, Austin Simmons connected with Lee for his second touchdown of the day as Navy pulled within three at 46-43. Throwing a golden money ball into the mix for extra points, Jaxson Dart reached Tre Harris in the endzone for Red to go up 56-43.

Taking on the Grove Bowl Gauntlet, Navy ran away with wins in three out of four rounds as Red still remained ahead 61-58.

Heading into the final quarter of 7-on-7 on the day, Navy took its first lead with a touchdown from Simmons to Ayden Williams and go ahead at 65-61. A 50-yard made field goal from Caden Davis tacked on three more points for Navy, with seven minutes of action remaining. Navy extended its hold to double-digits off a pick six, going ahead 73-61.

A coaches score change provided Navy with a six-point lead at 70-64 with under two minutes remaining. A deep shot from Howard to Mac Owen on the Red side forced a tie at 70 all. Still tied at 70, it came down to a make or miss field goal from Navy’s Davis. From 65-yards deep, Davis couldn’t complete to provide Red with a 71-70 win in the 2024 Grove Bowl Games.
