Some Latvian sports federations demand early elections of the LOK president

LTV states that the federations believe that the current LOK president Jānis Buks has not fought enough for sports funding and common interests. Buk would be ready to continue his work at LOK.

21 sports federations have announced in a letter that the LOK presidential election will be held earlier than originally planned. It emphasizes that the leadership of the committee should be entrusted to such people who have received a full-term mandate from the members of the LOK. The federations that signed the letter, which in most cases are relatively small in terms of the athletes represented, refer to the fact that Buk, who has been in office only since last summer, has previously indicated that he will work only until the next LOK presidential election and will not run for a second term, reports LTV.

It was previously reported that Buk blames persons close to the Minister of Education and Science Anda Čakša (JV) for exerting political pressure.

Buks LTV has revealed that LOK’s relations with the Ministry of Education and Science (MES) have worsened after LOK refused to conclude a cooperation agreement with the publishing house “Rīgas Vilņi”, where Cakša councilor Raivis Bergs previously worked. On the other hand, Berg’s sister Elina has been the operative manager of the publishing house since last October.

Berga denied that there had been talks about the possibility of cooperation, but Buk highlighted that there were talks with the publishing house even before Berga became the operational manager, LTV said.

He explained that shortly after he was elected LOK president in July, he had received instructions from the Ministry of the Interior that it was necessary to dismiss several long-term employees of LOK.

“If I want productive cooperation with the Ministry of Education and Science, then I have to fire Dace Gulbe, Raitis Keselis and Lilita Mitrofanova, who is Rait Keselis’ spouse,” Buk previously told the program.
