six matches behind closed doors for Trabzonspor after the violent clashes against Fenerbahçe

The Turkish club will have to play six matches without an audience after the violence following the championship match against Fenerbahçe on March 17.

The Turkish club Trabzonspor was sentenced to six matches behind closed doors after violence which broke out in March on its pitch following a championship match against Fenerbahçe, the Turkish Football Federation (TFF) announced on Wednesday.

The TFF Disciplinary Board also sanctioned two Fenerbahçe players, Dutch defender Jayden Oosterwolde and goalkeeper Irfan Can Egribayat, with one match suspension and fines of several hundred euros.

The Dutch player was filmed kicking a Trabzonspor supporter who entered the field with his face masked.

On March 17, a crowd of Trabzonspor supporters invaded the pitch of their stadium at the final whistle of a first division match lost by their team, while players from Fenerbahçe, one of the three big clubs in Istanbul, celebrated their victory.

In addition to the matches behind closed doors, Trabzonspor faces two fines totaling around 90,000 euros.

Summoned before the TFF disciplinary council, the Nigerian player of Fenerbahçe Bright Osayi-Samuel, who had punched a supporter, was not sanctioned, “the conditions for violation of disciplinary rules not being met”indicated the authority.

The scuffle provoked strong reactions in Turkey, three months after a violent attack on a referee by a club manager following a Süper Lig match.

Fifa boss Gianni Infantino denounced violence “unacceptable”.

Thirteen Trabzonspor supporters were arrested in the aftermath, five of whom were placed in pre-trial detention.
