The spectators were excited to see how Holger Rune was able to overcome the exertions of the previous day for his quarter-final game at the ATP Masters tournament against Jannik Sinner. Ultimately, the Dane had to finish two three-set matches, including the marathon against Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov in more than 3.5 hours. The South Tyrolean, on the other hand, has only played nine games in two matches so far.

Rune showed from the start that he could keep up with the groundstrokes and keep putting pressure on Sinner. The 20-year-old got his first break chance in the match in the third game, but Sinner countered it with three first serves in a row to equalize. In the following game, the 22-year-old Sinner earned his first two chances and immediately used the first opportunity to break. As a result, the Australian Open champion left nothing to be desired on his own serve and, without losing a point in the last game, secured the set win with an ace.

The second act started evenly before Sinner was able to create three break chances in the fifth game. With five points en suite, Rune turned the game around and stayed in the set. With the score at 5:5, the Dane was faced with another 0:40 after a warning for exceeding time, which he was able to turn around with five consecutive point wins with his fighting spirit and strong serves. In the tiebreak due, Sinner, who didn’t allow a break chance throughout the entire round, managed the first mini-break with a brilliant backhand pass and got two match points with his own serve to make it 6:4. However, Rune bravely fought back against defeat once again and managed to spectacularly equalize the set by winning four points in a row.

The decision-making process was also balanced for a long time. Rune got the first break chance, but he missed it. In the eighth game there were break opportunities for Sinner, who was given a double fault by the Dane to give him a 5-3 lead. In the last game, Rune fought back to 30:30, but was no longer able to prevent Sinner from winning, who scored a serve winner to secure a 6:4, 6:7 (6) 6:3 victory after 2:42 Hours sealed.

In the semifinals, the tournament’s No. 2 will face two-time Monte Carlo champion Stefanos Tsitsipas of Greece, who prevailed 6-2, 6-2 against Russia’s Karen Khachanov in 83 minutes.
