The Israeli team will not leave UEFA: it could be invited as a guest as happened in the past to Japan and Qatar
Israel could play the Copa America, but without leaving UEFA, unlike what Australia did which moved from the Oceanic Confederation to the Asian one. The signing with Conmebol, the South American football body, was made official by the Israeli Football Federation. The agreement was made, in fact, in view of the participation of the senior national team – which did not qualify for the European Championships in Germany next summer – in the next editions of the Copa America. This is a particularly exciting historical moment, an international turning point for our Federation. I really hope that the Israeli national team is part of the most important tournaments organized by Conmebol, including the Copa America, these are the words of the president of the Football Federation, Moshe Zuares, to the US newspaper The Athletic.
At the moment no official comment has been received from FIFA or UEFA. The South American tournament will be held from 20 June to 14 July in the United States, practically overlapping with Euro 2024. This is not an absolute novelty for the Copa America. In the past, Japan (twice) and Qatar have already participated despite being part of another confederation thanks to a direct invitation from Conmebol. Who had done the same thing with Australia and China, but both national teams had refused due to organizational complications. Israel was once part of the Asian Confederation – it was one of the founding members – and in 1964 it won the Asian Cup.
