FC St. Pauli doesn’t have much left to gain promotion to the Bundesliga. However, defense chief Wahl warns about the next two very special games. A delicate situation could arise in the Volksparkstadion that would be a nightmare for HSV fans.
FC St. Pauli is only missing a maximum of three wins in the promotion race of the 2nd Bundesliga. The return to the first division after 13 years is imminent. The next two games after the important 2:1 (1:1) win at Hannover 96 are tough for Hamburg: the two arch-rivals Hansa Rostock (Friday, 6.30 p.m./Sky) and Hamburger SV (Friday, May 3).
St. Pauli’s defense chief Hauke Wahl warned in Hanover not to be distracted by the explosiveness of these two duels. “These are always two special games for our club. We in the team know how important it is for the fans,” said the 30-year-old. “But we should still downplay the whole thing a bit. Because in the end, these games are only about three points.” Nevertheless, “there will be a bombastic atmosphere in the stadium on Friday. And we gained self-confidence by winning today.”

The following week we will go to the Volksparkstadion – here the scenario could arise that the promotion will be perfect in the home of the city rivals, including corresponding pictures of the Paulians celebrating on the pitch and in the stands. That would be a nightmare for HSV supporters and probably the greatest humiliation since the days of May 2009, when northern rivals Werder Bremen won the DFB Cup and the then UEFA Cup in the Volkspark within just a few days. The Hamburg police would probably like the checkered flag in the promotion race for both teams to be waved elsewhere.

Back to sport. Wahl moved from Holstein Kiel to FC St. Pauli before this season. Four match days before the end of the season, both clubs are in the two direct promotion places and the defender still has a lot of private contact with his ex-colleagues and sporting rivals. “Now it’s crunch time,” said Wahl in a Sky interview. “Of course I wish the best for myself and my team. But right after that comes Holstein Kiel.”
