Jannik Sinner has known his first opponent at the Masters tournament in Monte Carlo since Tuesday afternoon. He is a man with a prominent name and an equally prominent partner.

If the persistent capricious weather in the Principality allows it, then the time has come for Jannik Sinner on Wednesday: after a bye in round one, he will make his first appearance at the high-ranking clay court tournament in his adopted home at around 1 p.m. The opponent is Sebastian Korda.
The number 27 in the world rankings prevailed on Tuesday after an initial rain break in a record time of just 64 minutes against the Spanish clay court specialist Alejandro Davidovich Fokina (ATP 29). He won clearly 6:1, 6:2.
Sport is in his genes
Not only is Korda’s rapid first-round appearance remarkable, but also the talent that the 23-year-old was born with. He won the Australian Open for juniors, made it to the round of 16 in the “big ones” in Melbourne in 2020 and bowled out Daniil Medvedev there in 2023. However, this shouldn’t be surprising, as his father is the Czech tennis legend Petr Korda, who himself won the Australian Open in 1998. His mother, Regina Rajchrtova, was also an active tennis player. The sisters Nelly and Jessica, on the other hand, earn their daily living in professional golf.

Not only Sebastian Korda’s relatives are well-known, but also his partner Ivana Nedved. She is the daughter of Czech football idol and Juventus icon Pavel Nedved. Korda and Nedved have been a couple for three years. Immediately after completing her marketing studies, she moved to live with her boyfriend in the USA, where he was born and grew up. Since then, Nedved has followed Korda every step of the way during the tennis season. This was also the case at the tournament in Monte Carlo, where the 26-year-old will be keeping her fingers crossed for her star against Sinner from the stands.
One win each so far
However, the South Tyrolean is less likely to be troubled by the prominent support in the stands than by Korda’s technical skills. The last time he felt this was in the quarter-finals in Adelaide in 2023, when he lost 5:7, 1:6 to the American with a slight injury. Two years earlier, Sinner had the upper hand in two sets in the first of two meetings between the two in Washington.
