Schweinsteiger, very critical of Guardiola: "We trusted his style and it was a mistake"

Taking advantage of Manchester City’s elimination from the Champions League at the hands of Real Madrid, Bastian Schweinsteiger, Bayern Munich player from 2002 to 2015, has been very critical of Pep Guardiola.

The former German footballer left the Bavarian club in 2015, when the Spanish coach was still on the Bayern bench. Now, in a chat with Gary Neville on The Overlap podcast, he has spoken about his former coach and has assured that he was not everything as he expected.

“When Pep Guardiola arrived at Bayern he had a style of football that was incredible. The ideas he gives to the players, and also during the game, are amazing. But what happened is that many other clubs, and even the German national team, They tried to copy him,” he said.

“We completely forgot about our DNA, we trusted Pep’s style a lot and I would say that it was a small mistake in German football,” said the midfielder, retired since 2019.

For Schweinsteiger, Pep should have changed his style: “I have always said that he trained in Barcelona and there he had 11 actors on the field and he had a film. But he tried to make the same film at Bayern and at Manchester City, and sometimes, “If the actors change, it’s difficult.”

“I think Pep Guardiola learned a lot during his time in Munich, and also during his first years at Manchester City, to know that to win the Champions League he needs to be strong in defense,” said Bastian.
