Schrems Baseball Players Make Successful Return to 2nd Bundesliga East with Double Win

After a one-year interlude in the 2nd Bundesliga Center in the previous season, the Schrems baseball players returned to the eastern region to compete in a new league mode in the 2nd Bundesliga East (North Division).

VIENNA/SCHREMS. The start of the championship took the Waldviertel baseball players to Vienna, where they met the Vienna Metrostars 2 from the South Division. Without having played a preparatory game, they tried to stand up to a team full of Bundesliga experienced and young players. The new import from Alabama also made his eagerly awaited debut with the Schremsers.

Spiel #1: Beers vs Metrostars 2 (13 – 8)

Veteran Daniel Spazierer took the mound for Schrems in the first game, and he showed a solid performance right from the start. Although Mets players repeatedly got on base, the defense initially held zero. It was difficult to get going offensively, the rust and lack of match practice became quite evident in the early phase. The hosts scored the first points in the third inning and took a 3-0 lead.

However, as the game continued, the Beers’ bats slowly woke up and the first runs of the season could be scored. In the 5th period they were able to take the lead and extend it to eight points by the last inning. Dominik Bauer, now working as a pitcher, tried to get the first game over, which he managed to do confidently despite some uncertainty in the Beers defense. Although the capital city team struggled a bit, they were no longer able to achieve more than a cosmetic result.

Spiel #2: Beers vs Metrostars 2 (11 – 0)

Jerry Slayden Swanson from Rogersville, Alabama, who only arrived in Schrems last Thursday to support the Beers as a player, was called up by coach Hannes Filler as the starting pitcher for the second game of the day. Jerry had the Viennese hitters largely under control and only allowed a few baserunners.

However, with a good defense behind them, the hosts were unable to capitalize. But Beers’ bats were also initially kept in check by the young and very hard-throwing Metrostars pitcher. A 1-0 lead made for a very exciting game that lasted until the 5th inning. Only then could the score be increased and the lead extended.

The Beers took merciless advantage of the Viennese’s change of pitcher and faulty fielding, and coupled with a dominant pitching performance from Swanson, they celebrated a shutout under floodlights late in the hour and the second win of the day for a so-called sweep.

Next game in Slovakia

A promising start to the season for the Schrems team with two wins against a talented and strong Metrostars team. Despite the lack of game practice, the entire lineup showed solid baseball in all phases. After a week’s break, the Beers’ longest away trip of the season is on the agenda when they meet the Angels Trnava in Slovakia.
