5. The legendary kingdom of Fanes

The Regn de Fanes parade in San Vigilio di Marebbe returns on 6 August 2023 with the costumes and carts that narrate the epic of the Fanes, the oldest people who inhabited the high Conturines. The folkloric event takes you back in time, when the courageous princess Dolasilla, the most important heroine of the Ladin national epic, with her courage, her white armor and her magic arrows, defeated all her enemies, making her life people in a golden age.
This appointment is strongly felt by the Ladin population, since it traces a tradition which – handed down orally and then rearranged thanks to the work of Karl Felix Wolff, Austrian journalist and anthropologist – dates back to the Iron Age. The epic takes place entirely on the Fanes plateau, one of the most fascinating destinations in the Dolomites, where you can witness the natural spectacle of the “Parliament of Marmots”. In fact, legend has it that it is from here that the princess received the wise advice of the marmots.
