Having lost in the semi-final series of the “Ramirent” National Basketball League against “Gulbenes Bukiem”, the basketball players of Salaspils Sports School won two matches in the following matches, won the series 2:1 and already in their debut season entered the finals in the second strongest league. Last year, the people of Salaspils played in the (third) final of the Regional Basketball League.
On Sunday, in the decisive match of the semi-finals in Gulbene, the visitors made a serious bid for victory in the middle of the first half, when they achieved the first significant advantage (21:13) with a 14:2 breakthrough. In the second quarter, the “Bukis” briefly reduced the difference to three points (24:21), but then they failed to score a single point for six minutes in a row, and even though the Salaspils team did not perform particularly well offensively, the visitors went into the break with a nine-point handicap ( 35:26).
The decisive events took place at the beginning of the second half, when the Salaspilians increased the score difference to 23 points (54:31) within five minutes. At the very beginning of the fourth quarter, the Gulbenians surprised the opponents with pressing and two accurate long shots (60:47), but it didn’t get any closer – Salaspils basketball players celebrated the victory 80:68.
For the winners, five players scored at least ten points, the most – Jānis Antrops (14), who played in “Gulbenes buku” last year. Dāvis Klegeris 13 points, Kristians Pastors 11, Jānis Pozņaks and Jānis Lasmanis 10 each.
In the final series, which will run until three wins, the Salaspils sports school’s opponent will be the basketball club “Jelgava”, which took first place in the Western Group of the NBL in the main tournament (15-3; the people of Salaspils were third in the East with a record of 15-5). This season, the teams met in the second round of the Latvian Cup, where the Salaspilians won in two games (96:74 and 72:80). The first match of the final is scheduled for Wednesday, April 10.
