Daniil Medvedev, fourth in the world rankings, is already in the round of 16 at the ATP 1000 tournament in Monte Carlo.
The Russian lost on Thursday against his compatriot Karen Khachanov 3:6, 5:7.
“I’ve narrowly lost to him a few times on hard courts. I think I cope better on clay than he does, and that helped, especially mentally. I know that he doesn’t like playing on clay,” said Khachanov after the match game. For him it is the fourth victory over a top 5 player.
Khachanov will now face either Ofner conqueror Alexander Zverev or the two-time Monte Carlo winner Stefanos Tsitsipas from Greece in the quarterfinals.
