The world number 6, who benefited from a bye in the first round, lost to the Australian Alexei Popyrin (ATP 46) 4:6, 4:6 in the second round. Andrei Rublev continued his disappointing performances in the previous two tournaments in the 1000 category in the Principality. He had only won one game in Indian Wells, California, and also lost straight away in Miami.
The 26-year-old missed two break chances to take a 2-0 lead in the opening set and instead ended up trailing 1-3. Popyrin managed his lead, secured the first round and realized the decisive break in the second set to win the match. In the round of 16, the Australian will face his compatriot Alex de Minaur, seeded number 11.
