Rostock Seawolves Fall to Ratiopharm Ulm in BBL Match-Up

The big surprise didn’t happen. With 71:96 (21:15, 15:28, 24:24, 11:29) the Rostock Seawolves lost their home game against the reigning German champions Ratiopharm Ulm in the easyCredit Basketball Bundesliga (BBL). With only seven wins and 20 defeats, the North Germans remain 15th in the BBL and still have to worry about staying in the league.

Rostock Seawolves concede 0:17 run

“We did a good job for over three quarters, then we went on a 17-0 run and the game was over. We can’t allow ourselves a last quarter like that. It starts on offense when we didn’t hit very good shots and then we completely lose the game on defense. But in my opinion that only comes second,” said Seawolves coach Christian Held, who once again praised the great support of the spectators: “The fans were incredible again.”

In the duel with the traditional club, which is the third largest club in Germany in terms of members behind the Seawolves and Alba Berlin, the North Germans kept up until the fourth quarter, before Ulm went on a 17-0 run from 69:64 (33rd) to 86th :64 (37th) decided the game in their favor. While the Wolves failed to score threes from Derrick Alston Jr. (2) and Sid-Marlon Theis, the guests now hit their shots.

The Rostock team had previously gotten off to a good start (10:2) and won the first quarter 21:15. But the quality of Baden-Württemberg became clear in the second section, as they took the lead for the first time at 28:25 (15th). But the Wolves fought back and made it 34:32 (17th) through Eric Lockett. However, that turned out to be a flash in the pan, as Ulm got stronger and stronger and led 43:36 at the break.

At the start of the second, the Wolves were also able to make a few exclamation marks. Derrick Alston Jr. completed a so-called poster dunk against his opponent Karim Yallow, with the attacking player spectacularly stuffing the ball over the defender and through the net – 38:45 (22nd). A little later, Tyler Nelson was hot, converted three three-pointers in a very short time and gave the 3,903 spectators in the town hall hope – 60:65 (29th). But Ulm always had the right answer ready and pulled away irresistibly in the final quarter. “Ulm was a lot too big for us this time,” said André Jürgens, club boss of the Rostock Seawolves.

The Wolves had to play in this game without their new signing Augustine Rubit, whom they signed from FC Bayern Basketball two weeks ago. The American, who has not played a game for over a year due to a torn Achilles tendon, is in team training and is making a good impression. “I can’t say yet when we can use him. But he is training with the team and is on the right track. I’m in good spirits,” said Christian Held.
