Roger Goodell said he is looking at a future with 18 regular-season games and the Super Bowl on President’s Day Sunday.
NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell is considering a future with 18 regular-season games, a Super Bowl on President’s Day weekend and a significant increase in international games.

Goodellduring an appearance at the “Pat McAfee Show” This Friday, he shared his long-term vision, which involves numerous changes to the format current of the season.
Specifically, Goodell noted that would adopt a schedule with 18 regular season games and two preseason games, a significant change with respect to the 17 games regular season and three current preseason games which were implemented in 2021.
“I think we’re good at 17 now,” Goodell said. “But listen, We are seeing how we continue. I’m not a preseason fan.” Then, pointing to a group of fans gathered nearby, Goodell added: “And I don’t think these guys like it either.“. He continued: “The reality is that I prefer replace a preseason game with a regular season game whenever. That’s simply choosing quality. “If we get to 18 and 2, that’s not crazy.”

Adding a regular season game could, in theory, result in a second week of rest, which would lengthen the regular season. But Goodell I would appreciate that, he said, since Imagine a President’s Day weekend around the Super Bowl Sunday night.
“And then you have Monday off,” Goodell said.
Until now no steps have been taken towards any of the possible changes. And it is important to note that changes to the length of the season would have to be collectively bargained with the NFL Players Associationas it was when the most recent labor agreement was negotiated.
The move towards 17 games initially faced significant opposition from players, even after the owners approved the deal. Notable players such as the quarterback of the New York Jets, Aaron Rodgers, responded publicly. The CBA was finally approved with a slim majority in the players’ vote, with 51.5% of votes in favor.
Goodell also spoke about a future expansion of the number of matches played internationally, saying that provides for up to 16 regular season games played abroadMaybe within the next 10 years. The NFL is adding international marketsincluding Brazil this year and Spain next.
As to whether a team or division will ever be based overseas, Goodell seemed less certain.
“Will there ever be a franchise or a division?” he said. “Maybe. Although I think that’s more than 10 years.”
