Reviving Baseball in Ferrara: Unification of Two Associations Marks New Beginning

With the elections of the new board of directors of the Ferrara Baseball Softball Club last April 10th, the process of reunification of the two baseball associations in the Ferrara area was concluded. The hit-and-run movement has remote roots. In the early 1970s, a group of boys began training almost everywhere as they didn’t have a pitch available and hosted the matches on the lawn of the Motovelodromo. In 2013, among the overwhelming enthusiasm of the Dominican Herrera, some glories of that team of the 70s and 80s (among all Fabio Abetini) and new fans, the Ferrara Baseball Softball Club was reborn from the ashes and among the founding members we find many names still committed to developing this sport today (Edmondo Squarzanti, Marcello Zanardi, Leonardo Fabbri, Fabio Abetini, Giovanni Novi, Pierluigi Tura, Michele Benetti, John Rotondo, Roberto Medeot and Francesco Tura). Baseball is popular and grows rapidly, but in 2016 the fracture occurs. Estense Baseball was born from a rib, which effectively carries forward the amateur activity of adults.

However, from 2016 to 2023 they are difficult years, both companies are unable to make that leap in growth to guarantee a certain future. On the one hand Ferrara cultivates very young players by also participating in the federal championships and reporting results, but in fact without a space in which to launch the kids once they grow up, on the other hand Estense which struggles to have resources to manage young people, it necessarily focuses on adults but without the necessary nursery for generational change.

2023 is the year of dialogue, and now the dissolution of Estense Baseball, with Ferrara once again reinvigorated by new forces. “I am really happy with this step – the first words of Francesco Tura, newly elected president of Ferrara Baseball and former president of Estense –. Now let’s all work together to revive our sport in the city of Ferrara”.
