Reviving Badminton: How Bornholm’s Clubs are Bucking the Trend

SPORT: The sport of badminton in Denmark is experiencing a decline in membership in recent years. A trend that, however, does not take hold on Bornholm, which can boast of an, albeit small, increase in the number of players.

The country’s badminton clubs have difficulty retaining players and attracting new ones. As many as 4,000 fewer members in 2023 compared to 2022. However, the problem does not exist on Bornholm. The clubs under DGI Badminton Bornholm have managed to retain the players and there is even a little progress to be seen. This must even be seen in light of the fact that two of the island’s youth departments have closed down in the same period.

Bet paid off
The venture with the employment of a coaching consultant Philip Fagralid already, after a year and a half, seems to have borne fruit. A large number of initiatives at both youth and senior level have contributed to the island’s clubs having managed to retain and increase the number of players. Among the newest measures is that the last meeting of the season, which has normally been held in March, is now held in mid-April. A total of 107 players compete in singles and mixed doubles in Aakirkebyhallerne on Sunday 14 April.

Social event
Experience shows that it can be difficult to retain players as soon as they become teenagers. That is the focus in Bornholm’s badminton.

That is why the island’s U13/U15/U17 players were invited to a game under UV light, a trip to the swimming pool and socializing in Søndermarkshallen on Friday. 32 of the island’s oldest youth players showed up and had the most wonderful afternoon and evening together.

11 new assistant coaches
More players require more coaches – and that, of course, also a focus area. On Sunday, Philip Fagralid and Kasper Fruergaard Nissen from the DGI assistant trainer course – and now 11 new assistant trainers are ready to assist the island’s other trainers.
