Regensburg Secures Last-Inning Win Against Stuttgart Reds: A Pitcher-Dominated Match With Exciting Finish

Regensburg only got their second win of the weekend in the last inning against the strong Stuttgart Reds. Close game with dominant pitchers and excitement on the sidelines.

Fourth home game, fourth win. The Guggenberg Legionnaires also prevailed against the Stuttgart Reds on Saturday. In contrast to the largely safe victory in the rainy game the evening before, this time the Regensburg team had to work hard until the last inning to keep the upper hand.

Pitchers dominate the game

Game 2 was dominated primarily by the pitchers. Scott Harkin for the Guggenberg Legionnaires and Reds pitcher Yaferson Lopez hardly allowed anything. Logical consequence: very few hits and even fewer points. However, Harkin had to accept the first run in action for Regensburg. Stuttgart took the lead in the first inning.

But that was largely it for the Reds offense. Only in the sixth inning did the pulse of the Regensburg baseball fans temporarily go into the red zone. With runners on bases 2 and 3 with no outs, the Legionnaires were in trouble. Catcher Elias von Garßen and Devon Ramirez at first base served the Stuttgart team a fine double play, supported by the somewhat over-motivated Reds attacker who stormed towards home. Scott Harkin ended his working day and Stuttgart’s ambitions for another run via strike out.

Stuttgarter flies off the field after throwing his bat

Jack Barrie from Stuttgart was not at all happy with it. He apparently thought he had touched the ball on the third strike. The Reds newcomer initially had a heated discussion with the umpire about this, only to make himself completely unpopular after the call was confirmed. The angry Berrie presumably wanted to fire his bat into the dugout. Instead, the massive piece of wood landed on the stands, narrowly missing some spectators. Logical and well-deserved consequence: Berrie flew off the field.

Regardless of this, the Regensburg offensive continued to work on Reds pitcher Lopez. Only Matt Vance and Elias von Garßen, who were in great spirits, found real access to the Venezuelan’s balls with two hits each. Consequently, this duo also ensured Regensburg’s equalizer in the third period of the game.

The Stuttgart pitcher now seems to be developing into a kind of southern version of the Japanese steel man Kubo, who throws for Hamburg. Against Heidenheim, Gomez pitched a complete game and in the Armin Wolf Arena he was on the mound until the ninth inning.

Amon and Miceli won’t let anything happen

On the Legionnaire side, national team outfielder Pascal Amon had now taken over from Scott Harkin. Left-hander Amon gave Stuttgart a lot of headaches, had no hits or runs and only had to allow walks. Regensburg’s manager Martin Helmig then resorted to a now well-proven stylistic device. After Amon’s good performance, Helmig brought his closer Nick Miceli into the game. This then ensured that the Stuttgart team had to be content with one run.

In the Regensburg final inning, however, there was real music again. Terrell Joyce, a home run hitter on Friday, walked onto base. Marlon Jimenez then fired a missile towards third base, which Moritz Köhler, who had been acting excellently up until then, had to let it pass. Edoardo Cornelli, who came on for Daniel Patrice, then put the Reds defense under pressure. The Stuttgart team decided to drop Marlon Jimenez at second base. Meanwhile, Cornelli landed safely at base 1, Joyce had now reached three.

Schmidt starts the party

The fans in the Armin Wolf Arena, who had endured the afternoon through a mixture of low temperatures, wind, rain, hail and (at least) sun, now felt that their resilience was about to pay off and raised the alarm.

Alex Schmidt then delivered the reward for fans and colleagues. He hammered a line drive out of reach through the infield, giving Terrell Joyce the game-winning run. The Legionnaires danced to Schmidt’s hit on and off the field, celebrating the walk-off hitter, themselves and Regensburg’s continued lead in the league table.
