‘Reconsider suspension and dismissal of Alex Kroes’

In a letter to the club’s members, the Ajax board of directors urgently appeals to the Supervisory Board to review that body’s decision to suspend and dismiss general manager Alex Kroes. This was reported by De Telegraaf, which managed to obtain the letter, on Saturday evening.

Kroes started his job as general director of the Amsterdam team, which was in crisis, on March 15. Barely two weeks after his appointment, on April 2, a huge blow followed when the club announced that Kroes was suspended due to the purchase of (another) 17,000 club shares, in the week prior to the announcement of his employment in the Johan Cruijff ArenA .

The Supervisory Board, through chairman Michael van Praag, was unrelenting: “The actions of Alex Kroes are not compatible with what we stand for with Ajax. The moment at which he bought the shares means that he traded with insider information. Such a violation of the law can cannot tolerate a listed company, especially if it concerns the CEO,” the former club chairman said on the club website.

The board, which represents 73 percent of the club shares, writes that it is aware of ‘the administrative rules and the complexity as Ajax is a listed company’. Nevertheless, the body hopes that the Supervisory Board will reconsider the suspension and eventual dismissal of the general manager: “Nevertheless, it believes that a reconsideration is possible which could lead to a return of Alex Kroes to Ajax in any form and under any conditions.” , it reads.

The board further writes that, as far as they are concerned, the Special General Meeting of Shareholders (EGM) of May 21 is too late to propose a reconsideration of the decision-making regarding Kroes, ‘since the most important weeks of football are about to begin for Ajax, both inside and especially outside. the field’. However, attempts to ‘arrange a conversation at short notice’ have not yet proven successful. “The Board of Directors therefore calls on the Supervisory Board to really look together next week to see what is needed to arrive at a reconsideration that serves the interests of Ajax,” the letter concludes.
