Düsseldorf/Mönchengladbach. The women’s team from Post-SV Düsseldorf met the 1st Judo Club Mönchengladbach last weekend at the start of the Judo Bundesliga season. The Post athletes beat the team from Lower Rhine 8:6 in their own hall and are now in second place in the Bundesliga North-West season.

Being able to host a Bundesliga matchday in front of a home crowd again – that’s something no one in Düsseldorf would have imagined recently. Post-SV Düsseldorf has a long tradition in the judo Bundesliga and even won the championship title in the upper house of German judo sport in 1965, 1966 and 1969. And yet just a few years ago we were far away from the glory days of the club’s history. It was only last year that the post-judokas made the leap into the newly structured women’s Bundesliga and have been fighting first-class again ever since.

The fighters were all the more excited to get back on the mat last Saturday, April 13th, 2024, in front of their home crowd on Suitbertusstrasse in Düsseldorf-Bilk. And of all things against local rivals 1. JC Mönchengladbach, an established Bundesliga club, also with a long history.

The Post women went into the encounter as clear outsiders, with the last encounter last year going 11-3 in favor of the Gladbach women. But the team of team trainers Harry Neuhaus and Michael Jobs didn’t let their outsider role show and turned up the heat right away in the first half of the encounter. Although Laura Schumann (- 63kg) had to admit defeat to third-placed Emilia Meffert at the start of the 2022 German U21 Championships, Selina Delen (- 70kg), Jacqueline Kulik (- 78kg), Kim Natascha Gaertner (+ 78kg) were able to win. and Esmeralda Puts (-57kg) prevailed in their weight classes. Kulik triumphed by sending her opponent to the mat using foot technique after just 6 seconds, causing the Düsseldorf audience to cheer. In the following fight in the weight class up to 48 kg, Sophie Seemann had to admit defeat to the reigning Belgian champion Lotte Petré after leading Waza-ari (second highest rating in judo fighting). But Femke Breier won without a fight (-52kg) and secured the 5:2 half-time lead.

The Düsseldorf coaches were extremely satisfied with the performance of their fighters and sent the same squad into the race for the second half of the season. Here Selina Delen (-70kg), Jacci Kulik (+78kg) and Femke Breier (-52kg, without a fight) were able to take the lead with three more wins, so that in the end an 8:6 victory was achieved. A real achievement for the still young team, which has only had one victory in the 1st Judo Bundesliga.

New signing Lien Meeuwssen unfortunately missed the start of the season due to injury, the Belgian was seriously injured in the last training session before the fight day and will miss the entire 2024 season. The next encounter for the team will be on April 27th, 2024: It will be against the front runner and title favorite of the Bundesliga North-West season, the Judo Club 66 from Bottrop.
