Pogacar is crowned for the second time in Liège-Bastogne-Liège

MADRID, 21 Abr. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Slovenian cyclist Tadej Pogacar (UAE Team Emirates) has conquered this Sunday the 110th edition of the classic Liege-Bastogne-Liege, the third ‘monument’ of the season and which was held over 254.5 kilometers, thanks to a devastating attack in La Redoute, more than 30 kilometers to the finish line.

In this way, Pogacar, who this year already triumphed in the Strade Bianche and in the Volta a Catalunya, once again reigns in ‘La Decana’, where he already achieved victory in 2021, and succeeds the Belgian Remco in the event’s record of achievements. Evenepoel, winner of the two previous editions and absent this year due to his hard fall in Itzulia.

In addition, the two-time Tour de France champion achieves his sixth ‘monument’ -Tour of Flanders (2023), Liège-Bastogne-Liège (2021 and 2024) and Giro de Lombardia (2021, 2022 and 2023) – and equals the Dutchman’s six Mathieu van der Poel (Alpecin-Deceuninck), who this Sunday finished second, 2:02 behind the winner.

The grandson of Raymond Poulidor, who in 2024 has accumulated victories in the E3 Saxo Classic, the Tour of Flanders and Paris-Roubaix, was cut off by a fall 98 kilometers from the finish. Meanwhile, Frenchman Romain Bardet (DSM-Firmenich) finished second at 1:39. Also in the peloton, 2:02 behind Pogacar, Pello Bilbao (Bahrain-Victorious) finished, ninth in the race classification.

In a race controlled at all times by the UAE Team Emirates and which was marked by a pileup that split the peloton in two, with Van der Poel cut off although he avoided going to the ground, it was at the most famous altitude of ‘La Decana’, La Redoute, where Pogacar attacked.

There were 34.8 kilometers ahead and the Slovenian made a change of pace to which only the Ecuadorian Richard Carapaz (EF Education-EasyPost) responded, although just a few meters). From there he walked alone to the finish line, where he stopped the clock at 6:13:48.
