Playoff Participants Determined in A2 Women’s Group B: Final Day Looms

The Editorial Team Tuesday 16 April 2024, 09:52

With only one day left to play, the playoff participants have been defined in Group B: Alperia Basket Club Bolzano has in fact gained access despite the defeat, because the defeat of Pallacanestro Femminile Umbertide has condemned the Umbrian team, which has the clashes directed against the Trentino team. Ecodem Alpo and ARAN Cucine Panthers Roseto are still fighting for second place and even in the last five positions everything is to be decided, with the last day therefore not to be lost sight of. Even in the safety zone, next weekend will be decisive: Wave Thermal Abano Terme and Pallacanestro Vigarano (for which coach Andrea Castelli has resigned in the meantime) are stuck at 8 and their respective matches against WomenAPU Delser Crich Udine and Posaclima Ponzano will determine which of the two will be relegated directly to Serie B without going through the playouts. The race for mathematical salvation for ninth place is instead a two-way affair between Velcofin Interlocks Vicenza and Pallacanestro Femminile Umbertide: the Umbrian team is momentarily at +2, but if they finish on equal points, Vicenza will have the upper hand, given the favorable tiebreaker.

Vicenza has put itself in a position where it can still hope thanks to the victory against Pallacanestro Vigarano, which came thanks to the good performance of Giorgia Assentato. The number 13 finished with 16 points, 5 rebounds and 3 steals, in what is her third best performance of the season after the 20 points recorded against Abano Terme and the 19 against Trieste. In terms of steals, this is the second best performance of 2023/2024 for Assentato, who stole as many balls on two other occasions, namely in the matches against Udine and against Abano Terme.

The top scorer of this day in Serie A2 was instead Julia Cecili, who finished the match against Basket Girls Ancona with 26 points, 5 rebounds, 3 assists and 3 steals. For the number 11 of ARAN Cucine Panthers Roseto it is not only the season high, but also the career high, given that she had never scored so much: the 33 rating she obtained is clearly the highest figure of her 2023/ 2024 and his two-point shooting percentage was excellent (88%), where he missed only once (8/9). For the captain from Roseto it is the second consecutive double figure, as well as the ninth of her season and the data on steals is also one of the best of her year. In fact, only in two cases had Cecili stolen four balls – against Rovigo and against Bolzano – while this was the third time in which he had three steals.

Threatening Roseto’s second place is Ecodem Alpo, victorious in the match against Solmec Rovigo thanks to the great performance of Anna Turel. The number 5 finished with 19 points and 5 steals, making her the top scorer of her team and of the entire match. For the class of 2002, this is the fifth best performance of the season in terms of points, and it is the eighth consecutive double figure in the matches in which she played (she did not enter the match against Vigarano). The data on recovered balls, however, is even more interesting: for Turel the five steals are the maximum figure in his career, which he had already achieved only on one occasion, namely in the match against Ponzano when in 2021/2022 he was still wearing the Udine shirt.

At the top of the rankings, the victory of Halley Thunder Matelica over Martina Treviso allowed the team from the Marche to gain a +2 advantage over the Venetian team and Futurosa iVision Trieste. Erica Sanchez she finished with 18 points, 9 rebounds and 0 turnovers coming off the bench, proving decisive in just 22 minutes in which she remained on the court. Like Chelsea D’Angelo, Sanchez was the best scorer of the match and found her second best performance of the season in terms of points, after the 22 scored in the match against Trieste. The 9 rebounds collected instead represent the best figure of her season, already achieved in the match against Abano Terme: the combination of these two factors allowed the class of 1976 to find its season high in terms of evaluation, with 26.

In closing, it is also worth mentioning the performance of another Argentine player, namely Celia Fiorotto, who in Posaclima Ponzano’s victory against Alperia Basket Club Bolzano finished with a double double of 12 points and 10 rebounds, as well as 3 steals and 2 blocks. For Fiorotto it is the fifth double double of the season, the first of the last ten days. After a good start to the season, Fiorotto had in fact dropped in level a bit, but Saturday’s performance gives Ponzano hope in view of the playoffs. It is the seventh time this season that Fiorotto has reached double figures in rebounds, as well as the ninth time that he has scored points and it is also the third time this season that he has finished with two blocks. As for steals, the three on Saturday are his career high in Serie A2, given that it is the maximum he has achieved this season, his first in Italy.
