HAARLEM – The Pickleball Dutch Open 2024 will take place from May 3 to 5 in the Kennemer Sports Hall – IJbaanlaan 4A – in Haarlem. This international tournament, now in its fifth edition, is known for its social atmosphere and good organization and includes singles on Friday, doubles on Saturday and mixed doubles on Sunday.

More than ten years ago, Bernadette Snijders ‘brought’ this sport from America to the Netherlands and introduced Pickleball in the Netherlands for inclusivity and fun for all ages. Simone Dhondt-Seggelink on behalf of the Dutch Open 2024 tournament committee: “We have our own club in Haarlem and we play four days a week in Haarlem-Noord.”

Pickleball is a dynamic racket sport that combines elements of tennis, badminton and table tennis. It is played on a court the size of a badminton court, with a net slightly lower than that of tennis. The ball, similar in size to a tennis ball, is made of durable plastic and has holes. The special paddle racket, without strings but made of sturdy wood or lightweight carbon, offers players a mix of power and precision. Pickleball is accessible, social and versatile, making it popular with people of all ages and sporting backgrounds.

Pickleball, like Padel, is rapidly gaining popularity. Although they share some similarities, there are also important differences between the two sports. Padel is played on a fenced court with glass walls, while Pickleball is played on an open court without walls. Padel is characterized by long rallies and fast play using the walls, while Pickleball has shorter rallies and the emphasis is on communication and strategy. Padel rackets are more massive and have holes, while pickleball paddles are smaller and have a solid head. Padel uses a ball similar to a tennis ball, but smaller and less crowded, while pickleball uses a perforated plastic ball.
