Para-European Championships in Madeira: World record and gold by swimmer Engel

World record in the morning, gold in the evening: Paralympics winner Taliso Engel had a perfect day at the European Swimming Championships in Madeira.

The 21-year-old from TSV Bayer 04 Leverkusen hit the 100 m breaststroke in the preliminary run over his parade route in 1:02.22 minutes, improving his previous record from the Summer Games in Tokyo (1:02.97 minutes).

“I didn’t think I would be able to swim so fast in the morning. I’m super happy,” said the visually impaired angel. He then won the final confidently in 1:02.69.

Josia Tim Alexander Topf (silver in the 150 m individual medley/SM3) and Mira Jeanne Maack (bronze in the 100 m backstroke/S8) also won medals on the second day of competition. At the start, Verena Schott (Greifswald) won gold in the 100 m backstroke in the starting class S6.
