Open wounds after the end of the master series

The end of the Munich title series will sharpen the senses. Leverkusen is too small to annoy the industry leader in the long term – and yet the return to old dominance cannot be taken for granted.

Now that everyone is congratulating Bayer Leverkusen on their German championship, it’s time to consider what that could mean for German football. Simply exposing FC Bayern like that will ultimately have consequences. Christopher Trimmel put it nicely last week: “I’m curious to see Bayern’s answer if they don’t win anything in a season. “It won’t be fun for German football,” said the Union Berlin defender.

At least the older ones who still remember what it was like when Bayern didn’t win the championship know what Trimmel means. Jürgen Klopp had challenged Munich with the Dortmund double championship. It seemed that a duel could develop for years with stumbling Bavarians who had difficulties with their own identity. But it didn’t because the people of Munich quickly took the necessary measures.
