He worked at Schalke 04 until the summer of 2023. There he was also assistant coach to legend Norbert Elgert for a while. This is considered the youth coach par excellence in Germany. He looked after kickers like Höwedes, Sane and Neuer in the U19. Elgert has been training this age group since 1996, with the exception of a one-year break (he was an assistant coach for the professionals in 2002/03).
The Schalke veteran thinks very highly of his former assistant coach. “I am very proud of Onur Cinel,” he told “WAZ”.

Cinel? “Absolutely great as a person”
Elgert “I worked with Onur for three or four years. He was my assistant in the U19 team. He is absolutely great as a person.” The 67-year-old counts Cinel as one of his best friends.
“He is a coach who always wants to learn, improve and develop,” said Elgert. At 38 years old, Cinel is probably not yet at the home stretch of his career. “I don’t think Onur’s journey is over. And I am absolutely convinced that he will live up to the expectations in Salzburg,” says Elgert.
