OneSight EssilorLuxottica Italia Foundation: A Year of Visionary Impact

Rome, 19 April. (askanews) – Eleven Italian cities reached, more than 8,000 people visited and almost 18,000 glasses donated by around 400 ophthalmologists, orthoptists and opticians involved throughout the national territory with the support of over 400 EssilorLuxottica volunteers: these are the numbers for the first year of activities of the OneSight EssilorLuxottica Italia Foundation, which presented the 2023 Social Report. An opportunity to take stock of the numerous assistance initiatives for the most vulnerable carried out so far – in collaboration with a dense network of partners and associations active in the area in various parts of Italy – and launch new challenges in the philanthropic and visual health fields for the future. Speakers included Andrea Rendina, General Secretary of the Foundation, Teresio Avitabile, Full Professor of Diseases of the Visual System and Director of the Ophthalmology Clinic of the University of Catania and President of the Italian Society of Ophthalmological Sciences SISO and Lucio Buratto, President of the Foundation’s Scientific Committee. Andrea Rendina: “For the OneSight EssilorLuxottica Italia Foundation the success factor is networking. And the results presented are the fruit of this commitment to the creation of a real solidarity network dedicated to the sight of the most fragile. A real circle virtuoso composed of ophthalmologists, orthoptists, opticians, EssilorLuxottica volunteers and associations who carry out such a meritorious task in the field”. The OneSight EssilorLuxottica Italia Foundation dedicates its activities to the most needy categories of people, such as the homeless, refugees, people in economic difficulty and in poverty, so that access to care is not exclusive, so as to realize the mission of the EssilorLuxottica Group : helping people, everywhere in the world, to “see better and live better”. The “Sight Days” are fundamental, an itinerant path of clinics that has created a solid network of collaborations, involving different realities in a transversal way. Then the special project “See you in Corviale”, in one of the suburbs of Rome. The OneSight EssilorLuxottica Italia Foundation has also created the first permanent eye center dedicated to people in poverty within the San Gallicano hospital hub in Rome, managed by the Community of Sant’Egidio. Also in 2023, in collaboration with FISPIC Italian Paralympic Sports Federation for the visually impaired and blind, the OneSight EssilorLuxottica Italia Foundation implemented the Judo Academy program. And much more, with key words for 2024 such as consolidation, continuity, coherence and collaboration. The presentation of the first social report of the OneSight EssilorLuxottica Italia Foundation, which took place on the occasion of the 3rd SISO National Congress, was also an opportunity to reflect on health poverty, with a worrying growing trend of people giving up treatment for economic reasons. An increasingly central theme in the Foundation’s action. Lucio Buratto: “Our healthcare system is one of the best in the world but due to the global crises and the international economic situations and in Italy it will have to reduce the economic commitment. There will not be sufficient resources, many people will give up treatment. The Foundation will have in this is a very important role, being able to assist those who cannot turn to public health.”
