Willem van Hanegem enjoyed Feyenoord during the legendary Classic last Sunday. ‘De Kromme’ thought it was right that his club went looking for a high result, saw two players excel and did not want to behave as is done in the capital.
“Everyone was convinced that Feyenoord would win,” he says in Algemeen Dagblad. “All in all, this was one of Feyenoord’s best matches ever. It was nice to see.”
Van Hanegem saw that Feyenoord ultimately managed to express the difference in strength with their arch rival in goals. “I mainly thought: make another one quickly, then you’ll be rid of everything. We often played Ajax upside down in the past, but then the score would be 2-1 or 3-2. They’ve always had that bravado. That they will then achieve a great result.”
The Feyenoord icon did not feel sorry for Ajax. “No why? I thought: make it 9-0, then you would have set a record forever.” Van Hanegem does not understand why some people found the 10-0 against PSV disrespectful at the time. “They don’t understand it. Do you think those Feyenoorders would not have liked to make ten on Sunday?” Yet he does not want to make the result more important than it is. “If you win 1-0 you just get three points.”
Van Hanegem especially enjoyed two players. “I thought our right winger, Minteh, was one of the best, just like our captain (Geertruida, ed.). The rest was a good enough result.” Furthermore, he does not want to participate in handing out superlatives to players. “Then we will become just like those guys there (in Amsterdam, ed.). We’ve been laughing all week. Then we shouldn’t do this, should we?”
