Rome, 16 April. (askanews) – On the eve of the 100 days since the start of the Olympic Games, the flame of Paris 2024 was lit. The ceremony in the historic birthplace of the Games, Ancient Olympia in Greece. The Olympic flame, which embodies the principles of peace and hope, will pass through Greece before arriving in France. After the stage in Marseille on 8 May, it will cross the entire country and some French overseas territories, before arriving at the Opening Ceremony in Paris on 26 July. Among the authorities present at the event the President of the International Olympic Committee ( IOC) Thomas Bach, the President of the Hellenic Republic Katerina Sakellaropoulou, the Vice President of the European Commission, Margaritis Schinas, the President of the Paris 2024 Organizing Committee Tony Estanguet, the President of the French National Olympic Committee and IOC member David Lappartient, the IOC members in France Guy Drut and Jean-Christophe Rolland, the French Minister of Sport and the Olympic and Paralympic Games Amélie Oudéa-Castéra, the President of the IOC Coordination Commission for Paris 2024 Pierre-Olivier Beckers Vieujant and the Mayor of Paris Anne Hidalgo.
In front of thousands of people, President Bach underlined Paris 2024’s commitment to upholding Olympic values and promoting global unity: “The Olympic Games are the only event that brings the whole world together in peaceful competition. The athletes Olympics send this powerful message: yes, it is possible to compete fiercely against each other and at the same time live peacefully together under one roof. Athletes will shine and show us what greatness human beings are capable of with all their excellence, determination and resilience”.
