Two clubs, the Archers du Harcouët (Saint-Hilaire-du-Harcouët) and the Archers sourdins (Villedieu-les-Poëles) jointly organized, at the Sartilly-Baie-Bocage complex (Manche), the Normandy championships, Saturday 17 and Sunday February 18, 2024. It was a first in the South Channel.
“Organizing such a competition requires a lot of human investment, before, during and after the competition, locates Christian Dunaud, president of the Archers du Harcouët, who mobilized around twenty volunteers, with his colleague from the Archers deaf, Jean-François Bitu. It would therefore have been too much for a single club. Also, the pooling of resources around the event was done easily between our two structures, of similar size (39 members each), where everyone knows each other. »
Sartilly, only compliant room
This sports complex had already hosted the Manche championships, in February 2023. However, Sartilly-Baie-Bocage does not have any archery club. “It is the only large room in the department, currently having sufficient dimensions to accommodate an event of this magnitude. An event to be contested on thirty targets simultaneouslyexplains Gérard Levavasseur, president of the departmental archery committee (15 clubs, 900 members). And as this year the sports complex was not occupied, on that date, by the French climbing championships (national youth bouldering championship organized in 2022 and 2023 in Sartilly), we seized the opportunity. »
Around fifteen referees were present to decide between the participants, aged between 21 and 77 and registered in bare bow (without sight), in compound bow on Saturday, then in recurve bow on Sunday. In total, the three specialties brought together 240 archers.

After the qualifying phase during which each competitor shoots twenty ends of three arrows (two minutes per end), it’s time for the duels, from the 16th or 8th finals, depending on the number of entries per category. For all, the targets were placed at 18 m. The highest ranked archers, at the end of this regional championship, will be able to compete in the French championships, scheduled for March 2 and 3 in Mouilleron-le-Captif (Vendée).
