Norchad Omier Declares Eligibility for 2024 NBA Draft: Making History for Nicaragua

The pivot wing Norchad Omierplayer for the University of the Miami Hurricanes, announced this Tuesday that he has been declared eligible for the 2024 NBA Draft, making him the first Nicaraguan whose name will be submitted for consideration by professional basketball teams.

“I am ready to continue this journey, and after much consideration and prayer, I have decided to declare for the NFL Draft. NBA 2024“, Omier, originally from the city of Bluefields, located in the Caribbean of Nicaragua.

The Nicaraguan attacker, who scored 17 points per game and grabbed 10 rebounds per game in his second season for the Miami Hurricanes franchise, had placed his name under consideration for the 2023 NBA Draft, while maintaining his college eligibility in Miami .

The 22-year-old player thanked his coaches who have supported him over the years, as well as his teammates at the University of Miami Hurricanes.

“I am a hurricane forever and I will be eternally grateful to the coach and his entire team for all the lessons, support, encouragement and for making me feel appreciated in this beautiful city,” he highlighted.

Omier, who was chosen as the second Nicaraguan basketball athlete of the year 2023, after the Puerto Rican nationalized Nicaraguan Jared Ruizby Nicaraguan Basketball Federation (Fenibal)improved his numbers in his last season with Miami.

In the 2022-2023 season he scored 13.1 points per game, with 10 rebounds; and in 2023-2024 he rose to 17 scores per game, with 10 rebounds.

Omier, who has been a member of the Nicaraguan basketball team, has a record of 15.2 points per game, 11 rebounds, 1.3 blocks, 1.4 steals, 1.1 assists and 57.6% effectiveness in field goals in four NCAA Division I seasons with Arkansas State University and the Miami Hurricanes.

The basketball player, 2.01 meters tall, who has recorded dozens of double-digit games in points and rebounds, has been nominated for the Karl Malone award, and is the Nicaraguan who has gone the furthest in organized basketball.

According to coach Pilin Álvarez, the ‘hurricane’ Omier was Miami’s most outstanding player by having a great season and a collegiate career in general.
