The defeat against Estudiantes last Friday could have represented Nicolás Valentini’s last game with the Boca Juniors shirt. The 23-year-old defender, who partnered with Carlos Lema, will not have continuity unless he renews his contract in the short term, which ends in December, by decision of the Football Council headed by president Juan Román Riquelme.

This was reported by César Merlo and Germán García Grova, journalists specializing in the transfer market. According to what they expressed, the group of former footballers who lead the Council have already communicated the determination to Diego Martínez, Xeneize coach, that this Monday the future will be played in the League Cup against Godoy Cruz.

In any case, despite the obvious existing tension, there could be a solution: the player’s entourage alleges that his desire is not to leave free, beyond the fact that he has already received football surveys from abroad (from Lazio in Italy , by case). And his representatives are willing to attend new meetings to reach an agreement.

Emerging from the La Ribera quarry and with a loan move to Aldosivi, Valentini became a solid and accomplished defender, offering variants to the coaching staff, which also has the aforementioned Lema, Marcos Rojo and the youth Aaron Anselmino. His good performances led him to be summoned to the Under 23 National Team which, under the tutelage of Javier Mascherano, obtained a ticket for the Olympic Games; and also to the Major: Lionel Scaloni called him for the tour of the United States after Marcos Senesi’s injury.

On Thursday a conclave was held between three members of the Council (Raúl Cascini, Marcelo Delgado and Mauricio Serna), the protagonist and Maximiliano Pra, his representative; but there was no rapprochement and witnesses spoke of a “hard” encounter. From the institution they assure that the proposal they made speaks of a link until 2028 with figures similar to those perceived by Cristian Medina, another of the figures on the staff.

This type of situation has been repeated in Boca when the players cannot close the renewal and the date on which they can begin negotiating as free agents approaches. It is part of Riquelme’s relentless “method” in contract bidding. It is worth remembering the cases of Marcelo Weigandt this season (he agreed and went on loan to Inter Miami), Agustín Almendra, Agustín Rossi, Julio Buffarini, Nahuel Molina and Cristian Pavón.

The contracts of Luis Advíncula, Edinson Cavani, Javier García, Darío Benedetto and Sergio Romero also end in December. Will there be a solution with Valentini? Or will he remain out of action until December, putting his participation in the Olympics with Argentina at risk?
