New Women’s Semi-Pro Football Team, Cedar Rapids Raptors, Launches in Iowa

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (WQAD) – A new semi-pro women’s football team is coming to Cedar Rapids.

The Cedar Raptors are an all-women’s tackle football team playing in the Women’s Football Alliance.

They’re now the second team based in the state, joining the Iowa Phoenix in Des Moines.

At first the team had only five women on its roster, but it has grown to 28 women.

Head coach Quinton Ray says the team will give everyone an opportunity to play football.

“I have three daughters and football hasn’t really been open to women playing and with women’s football up in Des Moines we had a lot of interest down here so we wanted to get this started up so everyone who wants to play football has the opportunity to,” Ray said.

The team will kick off its inaugural season Saturday against The Minnesota Minx.

Their home opener will be on May 11 against the Iowa Phoenix.

The team will play their home games at Coe College’s Clark Field.
