Borussia Dortmund will have a new management structure from May 1st: Lars Ricken will be the new sports director, returning Sven Mislintat will be technical director and Sebastian Kehl will remain sports director. How will the trio organize itself in the future?

The new structure, which applies from May 1, 2024, is new territory for BVB: Previously, the management consisted of three members, Thomas Treß, Carsten Cramer and Hans-Joachim Watzke. In the future – until Watzke leaves the operational business in 2025 – a fourth member will join: Lars Ricken will become Managing Director of Sports and will from now on be responsible for the entire sporting area. While he, as director of the Dortmund youth academy, has mostly kept a low profile from the general public in recent years, he is now stepping up to the front row.
Kehl’s contract is to be extended
Sebastian Kehl, however, remains in his previous position. Dortmund’s sports director had hopes of moving up to the new management position. The fact that it wasn’t he but Ricken who got the contract can definitely be seen as a personal defeat for the ex-professional, who has learned to fight during his career. His time at the club should not end with the decision for Ricken. On the contrary: the new sports director is expected to hold talks with Kehl in the summer about extending his contract, which runs until 2025. As of today, the likelihood that these talks will result in an expansion of cooperation is high.
Now lift, Ricken! BVB is rearranging its leadership – and HSV is becoming a dinosaur again
Hamburger SV is threatening to lose promotion to the Bundesliga again. Is the situation already hopeless or is there still hope? We discuss this with our HSV reporter Sebastian Wolff. Afterwards we talk to BVB reporter Matthias Dersch about the new management of Borussia, in which there is a prominent surprise.

In the future, Kehl should be able to concentrate fully on the substantive work surrounding the team and report to Ricken, who represents the club externally. Kehl, in turn, will report to Mislintat from May 1st, who as technical director will focus on planning the BVB squad and thus also relieve Kehl. For a long time, collaboration between the two seemed difficult to imagine. But these concerns have now been dispelled.
First practical test in the summer
The idea behind the new organizational chart is to bring the respective strengths of the different actors even more into focus and to relieve them in other areas in order to achieve a better result overall. Of course, only the practical test will show whether the project is successful. In any case, a lot of work awaits the new management team in the summer: The squad is to be rebuilt again based on the experiences from the current season.
