New Era at Borussia Dortmund: Lars Ricken Takes Over as BVB Boss

Dortmund wants to move forward into the future!

Sebastian Kehl (44) will not, as long expected, be promoted to sports director and thus successor to Hans-Joachim Watzke (64).

As the club announced on Monday at 10:30 a.m. in an ad hoc announcement, another legend is moving into the club’s management…

Lars Ricken (47) becomes the new BVB boss, signs until 2027!

The 1997 Champions League hero and three-time Dortmund champion has been working as a youth coordinator at the club since 2014 and is considered ambitious and reserved. He still enjoys cult status in fan circles today because of his goal in the final against Juventus Turin (3:1/”Ricken… Loppen now! Jaaaa!”).

For support, new managing director Ricken, like Watzke, is likely to rely on the services of chief advisor Matthias Sammer (56): Ricken and Sammer have been close friends since their playing careers and won the premier class title together. Watzke also maintains a close relationship with Ricken.

The personnel castling fits: With Thomas Broich (43/Hertha BSC), Borussia recently signed a well-known ex-professional for the young talent (BILD reported). Broich will take over as youth boss in the summer, his predecessor will move up to the club management – that’s how it should work…

Ricken will be the new sports boss in the managing trio with Carsten Cramer (55/Marketing) and Thomas Treß (58/Finance). Both extended their contracts early until 2027. Finally, the personnel had to be approved by the Presidential Committee.

The BVB makers had previously blocked all inquiries about new management appointments. Explanation: A change in club management is subject to notification by the listed company. Violations can be severely punished by the Federal Financial Supervisory Authority (BaFin)…

Boss quake in Dortmund!

► For a long time, sports director Kehl was seen as the logical successor to Watzke, who wants to gradually hand over sporting responsibility from this summer and step down from management completely at the end of 2025 in order to move to the office of president.

BVB: Kehl remains sports director, Mislintat joins

In recent weeks, however, the ex-champion captain has come under increasing criticism internally (BILD reported). Among other things, the club makers are said to not be completely convinced of Kehl’s transfer policy. Despite almost winning the championship title and reaching the Champions League semi-finals, club insiders describe the relationship as tense – Kehl supposedly expects more support and the bosses less mistrust.

► According to BILD information, Kehl had already been informed about his non-promotion for some time. Close confidants report that his initial frustration has given way to a let’s-now mentality. It is said that throwing it away is absolutely out of the question for Kehl (contract until 2025). For him too, an early extension until 2027 should only be a formality.

As sports director, he wants to continue to help lead his heart club to new titles. He is aware that he will probably have to hand over some influence in squad planning to returnee Sven Mislintat (51/most recently Ajax). The ex-chief scout is installed as the new technical director under Kehl (BILD reported). The club also made that official.
