Basketball professional Jontay Porter of the Toronto Raptors has been banned for life by the NBA. The 24-year-old is accused of betting fraud. This was announced by the North American professional basketball league.
An investigation found that Porter violated league rules by disclosing confidential information, restricting his own participation in one or more games for betting purposes, and betting on NBA games.
Porter intentionally allowed himself to be substituted to win a bet
“There is nothing more important than protecting the integrity of NBA competition for our fans, our teams and everyone associated with our sport, which is why Jontay Porter’s flagrant violations of our rules of the game will be met with the harshest possible punishment.” said NBA Commissioner Adam Silver in the statement.
The 24-year-old had been under investigation for weeks. During several Canadiens games this season, unusual bets were allegedly registered on the center’s performance.
In addition, the brother of Denver Nuggets star Michael Porter Jr. intentionally allowed himself to be substituted at least once in order to make betting winnings possible, it said. This happened on March 20, after which an organization that monitors legal betting markets raised suspicions with the NBA.
According to Silver, the investigation into the case is not yet fully completed. No professional in the NBA has been banned in connection with gambling in 58 years. (dpa/SID/ms)
