Navigating Trey Lance’s Future with the Dallas Cowboys: A Look Ahead

Today we will continue the series with quarterback Trey Lance.

  • Name: Trey Lanza
  • Position: Field Marshal
  • Experience: 4th year
  • Games played/Starts: 8/4
  • Remaining years of contract: 1
  • How it was acquired: 2023 Exchange (with San Francisco)
  • Key Stat: In his four career starts, Lance is 2-0 at home and 0-2 on the road, all four games playing for the 49ers.

Last: Drafted with the third overall pick in 2021, Lance was supposed to be the 49ers’ quarterback of the future. But obviously things changed with Lance’s injuries, coupled with the surprise play of Brock Purdy. That put Lance on the trade block and the 49ers sent him to Dallas last August for this year’s fourth-round pick. Lance spent the entire 2023 season as the third-string quarterback and his only work on the field came in practice.

The present: This will undoubtedly be an important season for Lance, who should receive plenty of reps in the offseason, training camp and of course in preseason games. Dak Prescott hasn’t played in the preseason since 2019, so don’t expect that to change this year. Cooper Rush will likely get playing time, but the Cowboys won’t be as excited to see him as they will be with Lance, who might even play a full game or two in the preseason. Perhaps there is a chance that Lance could beat out Rush for the backup spot, which would bring him one step closer to being able to play in games during the regular season.

The future: One way or another, the Cowboys need to figure out how to develop Lance more than they did last year. This is the last year of his contract because they opted not to exercise the fifth-year option, which would have been for $22.4 million in 2025. That doesn’t mean the team can’t re-sign him after the season, but without knowing what you can do in the field, it will be a challenge to calculate the correct cost. But don’t forget, the Cowboys gave up a fourth-round pick for the chance to develop Lance, so they’ll do everything they can to at least get him enough reps to at least bolster his trade value. The next few months should be interesting for Lance and the quarterback group.
