Narrowing the Gap: HSV Fights for Promotion in the Final Matches

Only four second division matchdays left, six points behind third-place Düsseldorf, plus the significantly worse goal difference: “It’s going to take a miracle now,” not only HSV striker Robert Glatzel knows. But how big is the belief in promotion still in the team? Or is all hope of relegation already lost?

Of course, they were back on the training ground in the Volkspark on Thursday morning, and they have to prepare for the difficult away game on Saturday (1 p.m., live ticker on MOPO.de) at Eintracht Braunschweig. “That’s our job,” emphasized captain Sebastian Schonlau in his clear speech on Wednesday.

The starting position, see above, is extremely modest. Seven points or six plus 16 goals have to be caught up. After Braunschweig, HSV will play the derby in Volkspark (May 3rd, 6:30 p.m.). If they win, St. Pauli could, under certain conditions, celebrate promotion to the Bundesliga on enemy soil – a horror scenario for everyone who is against the Rothosen hold.

HSV has to make up seven points on Düsseldorf

The season will then end in Paderborn (May 10th, 6:30 p.m.) and at home against Nuremberg (May 19th, 3:30 p.m.). The current relegation place holder Düsseldorf still has to play Schalke (in the top game this Saturday evening), against Nuremberg, in Kiel and against Magdeburg. Is Daniel Thioune’s Fortuna still slipping badly? With four wins of their own, does HSV still have a chance?

“Of course we know that theoretically everything is possible. But we all know that a lot has to happen for us to have a say again,” says Schonlau, assessing the situation realistically. “And we no longer have that in our own hands. What we have in our hands is our job. We have to implement that. Unless we do that, nothing else will help. That’s why we don’t need to think about chances, we have to win our game.” Full focus initially on Braunschweig.

Glatzel, who is currently not scoring, agrees with his captain: “As long as something is still possible, you always have to try everything until the end. But it is clear that everything has to come together now. It’s extremely difficult, but we can’t give up.”

Baumgart on HSV’s chances: “We are realists”

HSV coach Steffen Baumgart, not known as a dreamer, said on the subject: “We are realists. But that doesn’t mean we give up. There are six points to be gained in four games.”

Final sentence from defense chief Schonlau: “As long as it’s not completely over, you still have that spark of hope that motivates you.” (the)
