Murillo Karam granted house arrest – El Sol de México

The First Collegiate Criminal Court of the First Circuit granted the definitive suspension to former attorney Jesús Murillo Karam, allowing him to serve his preventive detention at home.

This occurs within the framework of the review appeal promoted by Murillo Karam, who faces a judicial process for his alleged participation in the crime of torture related to the case of the 43 Ayotzinapa normalistas who disappeared in 2014.

The request to modify the precautionary measure was initially denied, which led Murillo Karam to file an amparo lawsuit to obtain the suspension of the determination and serve preventive detention from his home.

The arguments that the Court offered to grant the definitive suspension are diverse. Among them, the fact that the accused suffers from a serious illness and is over seventy-five years of age stands out, which is contemplated as an exception in article 166 of the National Code of Criminal Procedures.

Furthermore, it is considered that the modification of the precautionary measure does not imply the release of Murillo Karam, but simply a change in the place of his detention.

In addition to this, it was emphasized that Murillo Karam demonstrated his willingness to collaborate with justice by allowing the execution of the arrest warrant, despite having the opportunity to evade it. It is also mentioned that his family situation and his age are elements that cannot be ignored.

The 76-year-old former official has been transferred to the National Institute of Cardiology on multiple occasions for medical studies.

According to information shared by his lawyers, the results showed that he has a blocked carotid artery, which puts him at risk of a brain clot.

Murillo Karam also suffers from hypertension and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). He even underwent Carotid Endarterectomy surgery.

In October 2022, he was admitted to intensive care to undergo surgery due to complications due to high blood pressure, high cholesterol and triglyceride levels.

According to the criminal case, the former prosecutor participated in acts of torture committed against alleged members of the Guerreros Unidos criminal organization, involved in the disappearance of the 43 Ayotzinapa normalistas in September 2014.

In addition to this, Murillo would have affected the investigations to locate the 43 normalistas who, according to investigations, were deprived of their liberty by municipal police and handed over to members of the Guerreros Unidos cartel.

The former official would have been a key player in forging the so-called “historical truth” around this case.
