MLB Teams Prepare for Historic Solar Eclipse Event at Progressive Field and Globe Life Field

This Monday the Guardians and the Rangers will experience an unprecedented event in both Cleveland and Arlington, since for the first time a solar eclipse will be seen in Major League Baseball parks.

Monday’s total solar eclipse will mark the first time such an event will be visible in a city that is hosting an MLB game at the same time.

In Cleveland, they will open the doors of their stadium, Progressive Field, for the Guardians’ first home game against the White Sox before almost four minutes of moon-induced darkness.

The Guardians, who will open the stadium gates at 2 p.m., will pause park access during the total eclipse, which will begin at 3:13 p.m. in Cleveland, peak at 3:15:41 and end at 3 :17:35.

Because the eclipse will not be visible from a significant portion of Progressive Field (due to the location of the sun and the stadium’s architecture), fans will be able to exit and re-enter the park through the left field and right field gates.

NASA and the Guardians pay attention to the solar eclipse

NASA and the Major League Baseball Players Association collaborated to develop videos and social media content to emphasize the importance of being responsible when viewing the eclipse.

In collaboration with MLB, NASA further spread those messages by providing video content to broadcast in Major League stadiums during this weekend’s games.

“It’s really special”said Wayne Saxer, a public affairs specialist at the NASA who is the agency’s leader for sports links.

And he said: “It makes me remember when we landed on the moon. There were 10 home games when we landed on the moon in 1969, and there were teams that stopped the game and got the message across. This time, it’s not us who do it; It is the universe that does it.”

“We are at an intersection where people who traditionally wouldn’t be interested in NASA are more interested in NASA.”Saxer added, “and you have NASA going to Major League games and reaching an audience that traditionally wouldn’t recognize our brand in the same way that the scientific community would.”

Although they are out of the way of where the full eclipse will be seen, the Yankees, Cardinals, Pirates, Reds and Blue Jays will all be hosting games in cities where at least 90% of the eclipse will be visible on Monday.

This will be the last total solar eclipse visible in the 48 contiguous United States until 2044.
